Troop 306 Weekly Newsletter- 07/19/2020

Troop 306 Weekly Newsletter

Celebrating our 108th Anniversary serving youth in Catonsville and beyond . . .

My apologies for the multiple newsletters this morning.  Last week's version was sent automatically before I could finish updating it.  Then, I sent the revised version to myself to proof, but the system sent it before I completed the final edits.

CALENDAR

Here are some important upcoming dates:

JULY

28 Special Welcome Meeting for New Scouts from 6 - 8 pm (tentatively outdoors at Catonsville Presbyterian Church)

30 Troop Meeting via Zoom

AUGUST

13 Troop Meeting/Court of Honor from 6:30 - 8 pm (tentatively outdoors at Catonsville Presbyterian Church)

27 Outdoor Activity from 6:30 - 8 pm (location TBD) (tentative)

We hope all of you continue to be safe and well.  We recently learned that most activities and meetings inside the Catonsville Presbyterian Church building will remain suspended through the month of September.  Troop 306 is cautiously moving forward with plans to hold some outdoor events at Catonsville Presbyterian Church.  Please see the schedule above -- note that the CPC location is currently tentative, but will be confirmed soon.  Any outdoor activity will be limited in size, or the Scouts will be separated by patrols.  Social distancing and face masks will be required.  Hand sanitizer also will be available.

If there are any changes to the schedule, we will update you as soon as possible.

SUMMER CAMP REFUNDS AND ALTERNATIVE PLANS

As previously indicated, some members of the adult leadership met last week to discuss alternative plans for the remainder of the summer.  The above schedule is the result of that meeting.  For the events planned in August, please note that we will be using Sign Up Genius to get a head count.  Because the Scouts will be separated by patrols/smaller groups, we will need some parent participation to monitor social distancing.  When the email is sent out, we ask that you please volunteer to assist if you're able to do so.

We likely will begin the refund process for summer camp payments within the next few weeks.  However, we have only received a few emails regarding refund preference (check, electronic refund via PayPal or Zelle, or Scout Account).  If you have not already done so, please email Cynthia with your preference.

CAMP CARDS UPDATE

There's only two weeks left to support the Council's Frontline Heroes Campaign, which will conclude on July 31.

For more information or to place an order, please click on the following link:  www.baltimorebsa.org/campcardorder.

So that proper credit is received, don't forget to include or remind your contacts of our unit (Troop 306) and your Scout's last name when placing an order.

NOTE FROM MS. GLENDA RE: DONATION TO MEMORIAL FUNDThe Memorial Fund committee received a generous donation from Albert Hsu, father of Eagle Scout Joe Hsu during this past week.  Other committee members were notified of the donation & a thank you letter has been sent.  It’s always a pleasant surprise to hear from a former Scout or Scout family who has good memories of their connection with Troop 306!

FOOD COLLECTION PROGRAM @ CPC

Catonsville Presbyterian Church is still working with other churches in the area to gather non-perishable food items.  However, the large green trashcans have been removed.  Instead, there is a direct food collection program every FRIDAY evening (4:30 -6:30 pm) at the entrance of the large Frederick Road parking lot.  Food collected there is then delivered to the Knights of Columbus on Saturday morning.  If you are able/willing to participate in this worthy cause, please consider doing so to help those in need.  All non-perishable items are welcomed, and also may be dropped off at the Knights of Columbus on Saturdays from 8 - 10 am.

ARROWHEADS UP NEWSLETTER

Based upon a suggestion from Mr. Don Martin, I recently signed up to receive Arrowhead District newsletter, which is titled "Arrowheads Up".  It's a really nice online newsletter that contains information pertaining to the District and Council.  The most recent edition came out on July 13.

Please see the link below:

One of the events that the District asked me to highlight is the 2021 National Jamboree, which is scheduled to take place next summer at Summit Bechtel Reserve in West Virginia.  Spots are filling up quickly.  Please see the newsletter for more information about this amazing opportunity.

POPCORN COORDINATOR NEEDED!

The Troop has started receiving information regarding this year's popcorn sale, which will occur in the fall.  A coordinator is needed for this activity.  The responsibility is not burdensome or overwhelming -- in fact, the sale pretty much runs itself.  If you are interested in helping with this task, please let Cynthia know.

Many thanks to all of the parents have volunteered for a role or responsibility within the troop.

  • Membership Coordinator/Liaison:  Kim Mason
  • Special Events Team:  Annie Guzman-Allen, Carolyn Jones, Kathy Hill, and Hope Riley
  • Cyber Chip Coordinator:  Marc Huete

  • Fundraising:  Camp Cards (Kristal McCormick); Popcorn Sales (volunteer still needed); Catonsville Arts Festival (Leighann Ruark); Renaissance Festival (Hope Riley); and Christmas Tree Shift Scheduling (Kristal McCormick)
